Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 · Art. 77

Every battery
gets a passport.

Publish the individual digital passport for every battery you sell in the EU: data, access tiers, version history and the QR address on the battery itself.

Scope

Who needs a passport?

The obligation lies with whoever places these batteries on the EU market.

LMT

Light means of transport

Batteries for e-bikes, e-scooters and similar vehicles.

> 2 kWh

Industrial and storage

Forklift, industrial equipment, home and commercial energy storage.

EV

Electric vehicles

The strictest data and access regime; dynamic data throughout use.

ESPR

Next product groups

Under Ecodesign Regulation (EU) 2024/1781, DPPs reach other groups; a new group is added as a catalogue.

Lifecycle

A passport is not a PDF. It lives with the battery.

  1. Production Model and batch data

Chemistry, capacity, recycled content, manufacturing site and date.

  2. Placing on market Publication and QR

The Publisher releases it with a declaration; a GS1 Digital Link QR goes on the battery.

  3. Use Dynamic data

State of health, remaining capacity, cycle count — from the BMS via API.

  4. Second life Repair and reuse

Repairers and second-life buyers request access; once approved they see dismantling data.

  5. Recycling Material recovery

Recyclers reach cathode, anode and electrolyte data with authorisation.

Data model

Enter it once, let it reach every battery.

  1. 1
    Model

Model data is entered once; every batch and battery inherits it.

    /01/{GTIN}
  2. N
    Batch

Production year × site; batch-specific values.

    /01/{GTIN}/10/{lot}
  3. N×M
    Item

Every serialised battery gets its own passport.

    /01/{GTIN}/21/{serial}

01

Ready-made battery catalogue

Battery Pass Consortium attribute list preloaded; see which field is mandatory for your class, and from when.

02

Compliance score and publishing gate

Publishing is blocked while mandatory fields are missing; fields without a standard yet are marked "standard pending".

03

Bulk data via CSV and API

A template generated from the catalogue: "Try" first (row-by-row error report), then "Apply".

04

Version history and immutable log

Compare any two versions field by field; every change recorded with who, when and which channel.

05

Separation of roles

Editors enter data, Approvers approve, the Publisher releases with a legal declaration.

06

One-click compliance package

PDF, JSON, version list, change and access logs, QR files, SHA-256 manifest.

07

Multilingual passport

TR / EN / DE / FR and more on request; AI translation drafts + human approval.

08

AI assistant and read-aloud for consumers

"Where do I dispose of this battery?" — the assistant uses public data only.

Access tiers

One passport, different data for different eyes.

Restricted data is filtered on the server; it never reaches the public page or the AI assistant.

Public Consumers, everyone

Manufacturer, model, chemistry, capacity, recycled content, collection information.

Legitimate interest Repairers, recyclers, second-life buyers

Request → manufacturer approval → authorised view. Dismantling data, part numbers, state of health. Every view logged.

Authority Market surveillance, the Commission

Test reports and conformity documents; one-click compliance package.

Regulatory status

  1. 17.08.2023 Batteries Regulation in force

Regulation (EU) 2023/1542; obligations phase in step by step.

  2. 18.07.2024 ESPR in force

Regulation (EU) 2024/1781 — the DPP framework for other product groups.

  3. 18.02.2027 Battery passport mandatory

LMT, industrial above 2 kWh and EV; at individual battery level.

  4. Pending Delegated and implementing acts

Carbon footprint method, legitimate-interest verification, ESPR schedules. The catalogue is updated; your data stays.

Plainly stated

What we don't do today

No "full compliance certificate" claim

The EN 18223 text is paid; the format is aligned with publicly available technical sources.

We don't calculate the carbon footprint

You enter the declared value; the delegated act on the method has not been adopted yet.

Legitimate-interest verification sits with the manufacturer

When the implementing act is published, only the verification step changes.

On the roadmap

EU DPP Registry integration, supplier portal, NFC/RFID data carriers.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

When does the EU battery passport become mandatory?

From 18 February 2027, every LMT battery (e-bikes, e-scooters), industrial battery above 2 kWh and EV battery placed on the EU market needs a digital battery passport at individual battery level (Regulation (EU) 2023/1542, Article 77).

Does it apply to manufacturers outside the EU?

The obligation lies with whoever places the battery on the EU market — so it reaches manufacturers exporting to the EU, including those in Turkey.

Who can see restricted passport data?

Public data is open to everyone. Restricted data (e.g. dismantling information, state of health) is filtered on the server and shown only to approved parties with a legitimate interest and to authorities; every authorised view is logged.

What format is the machine-readable passport?

JSON aligned with EN 18223:2026 (compressed and full representations), served via a public API and addressed with GS1 Digital Link.

Our data is in our ERP / BMS. Do we have to enter it twice?

No. Fill the CSV template from your ERP export, or send data continuously over the API with a company-scoped key — validated all-or-nothing, safe to retry.
